Silver-Catalyzed C-C Bond Formation between Methane and Ethyl Diazoacetate in Supercritical CO2

2011

Even in the context of hydrocarbons’ general resistance to selective functionalization, methane’s volatility and strong bonds pose a particular challenge. We report here that silver complexes bearing perfluorinated indazolylborate ligands catalyze the reaction of methane (CH4) with ethyl diazoacetate (N2CHCO2Et) to yield ethyl propionate (CH3CH2CO2Et). The use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as the solvent is key to the reaction’s success. Although the catalyst is only sparingly soluble in CH4/CO2 mixtures, optimized conditions presently result in a 19% yield of ethyl propionate (based on starting quantity of the diazoester) at 40°C over 14 hours.

OH-functionalized open-ended armchair single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) studied by density functional theory

2011

The structures of ideal armchair (5,5) single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) of different lengths (3.7, 8.8, and 16.0 A for C40H20, C80H20, and C140H20) and with 1–10 hydroxyl groups at the end of the nanotube were fully optimized at the B3LYP/3-21G level, and in some cases at the B3LYP/6-31G* level, and the energy associated with the attachment of the OH substituent was determined. The OH-group attachment energy was compared with the OH functionalization of phenanthrene and picene models and with previous results for zigzag (9.0) SWCNT systems. In comparison to zigzag SWCNTs, the armchair form is more (by about 5 to 10 kcal mol−1) reactive toward hydroxylation. Figure The structures of ide…

A Quantitative Model for Alkane Nucleophilicity Based on C−H Bond Structural/Topological Descriptors

2020

A first quantitative model for calculating the nucleophilicity of alkanes is described. A statistical treatment was applied to the analysis of the reactivity of 29 different alkane C−H bonds towards in situ generated metal carbene electrophiles. The correlation of the recently reported experimental reactivity with two different sets of descriptors comprising a total of 86 parameters was studied, resulting in the quantitative descriptor‐based alkane nucleophilicity (QDEAN) model. This model consists of an equation with only six structural/topological descriptors, and reproduces the relative reactivity of the alkane C−H bonds. This reactivity can be calculated from parameters emerging from th…

DFT studies of COOH tip-functionalized zigzag and armchair single wall carbon nanotubes

2011

Structure and energy calculations of pristine and COOH-modified model single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) of different length were performed at B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory. From 1 to 9 COOH groups were added at the end of the nanotube. The differences in structure and energetics of partially and fully functionalized SWCNTs at one end of the nanotube are observed. Up to nine COOH groups could be added at one end of (9,0) zigzag SWCNT in case of full functionalization. However, for (5,5) armchair SWCNT, the full functionalization was impossible due to steric crowding and rim deformation. The dependence of substituent attachment energy on the number of substituents at the carbon nanotube ri…

DFT calculations of structures, 13C NMR chemical shifts, and Raman RBM mode of simple models of small‐diameter zigzag (4,0) carboxylated single‐walle…

2012

Linearly conjugated benzene rings (acenes), belt‐shaped molecules (cyclic acenes), and models of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with one carboxylic group at the open end were fully optimized at the B3LYP/6‐31G* level of theory. These models were selected to obtain some insight into the nuclear isotropic changes resulting from systematically increasing the basic building units of open‐tip‐monocarboxylated SWCNTs. In addition, the position of radial breathing mode (RBM), empirically correlated with the SWCNT diameter, was directly related with the radius of model cyclic acene rings. A regular convergence of selected structural, NMR, and Raman parameters with the molecular system size…

Palladium-catalyzed heteroaryl thioethers synthesis overcoming palladium dithiolate resting states inertness: Practical road to sulfones and NH-sulfo…

2018

International audience; We provide efficient synthetic access to heteroaryl sulfones in two-steps using a simple palladium-1,1'-bis [(diphenyl)phosphanyl]ferrocene catalyst to form in high yields variously functionalized heteroaromatic thioethers. Pyridinyl-containing substrates can be subsequently selectively oxidized into sulfones and NH-sulfoximines by using very mild oxidation conditions with a high functional group tolerance. In the palladium catalyzed C-S coupling of heteroaromatic thiols, reactivity limitation is attached with electron-deficient thiols. We show that this limitation can be resolved by the successful use of 2-bromoheteroarenes in the C-S coupling. We established herein…

Electrochemical C−H Functionalization of (Hetero)Arenes—Optimized by DoE

2020

Abstract A novel approach towards the activation of different arenes and purines including caffeine and theophylline is presented. The simple, safe and scalable electrochemical synthesis of 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) aryl ethers was conducted using an easy electrolysis setup with boron‐doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. Good yields up to 59 % were achieved. Triethylamine was used as a base as it forms a highly conductive media with HFIP, making additional supporting electrolytes superfluous. The synthesis was optimized using Design of Experiment (DoE) techniques giving a detailed insight to the significance of the reaction parameters. The mechanism was investigated by cyclic volt…

Direct P-functionalization of azobenzene by a cationic phosphidozirconocene complex.

2016

International audience; We report that the cationic phosphidozirconocene complex [(eta(5)-C5H5)(2)Zr(PCy2)][CH3B(C6F5)(3)] (II) reacts with azobenzene, resulting in the expedient formation of Zr complex (2) bound to a tridentate PNN ligand. This reaction proceeds by a mechanism of cooperative nucleophilic substitution of hydrogen. The intermediate sigma(H) adduct (1) has been characterized by NMR spectroscopy.

(2-Pyridyl)sulfonyl Groups for ortho -Directing Palladium- Catalyzed Carbon-Halogen Bond Formation at Functionalized Arenes

2017

International audience; We describe an efficient palladium-catalyzed selective C-H ortho-monohalogenation (X=I, Br, Cl, F) of various functionalized (2-pyridyl) aryl-sulfones. ortho-, meta-and para-functionalization is tolerated at the arene group which undergoes C-H halogenation. Some modifications are also possible on the 2-(arylsulfonyl) heteroaryl directing groups. A comparison of the halogenation efficiency suggests that bromination is the practical method of choice, while chlorination and fluorination are possible but more challenging. Under forcing conditions ortho-dihalogenation can also be achieved.
